ANC vs IEC: ConCourt to rule on candidate list dispute

JOHANNESBURG - The Constitutional Court is expected to deliver judgment on Thursday in the ANC’s bid to have its candidates included on the ballot for the November local government elections.

The party is challenging an Electoral Court ruling in favour of the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC), which excluded its candidates from contesting elections in six municipalities.

The dispute stems from the ANC’s failure to click the “Submit as Final” button on the IEC’s candidate nomination system before the 28 August deadline.

The ruling is expected to determine whether the ANC’s candidates will be allowed to contest the elections in the affected municipalities.
