Brown Mogotsi denied bail, intends to appeal

JOHANNESBURG - The Johannesburg Magistrate's Court has denied alleged political fixer, Brown Mogotsi, bail.

He intends to appeal the bail decision at high court.

Mogotsi who has been in custody since his arrest on 15 May, appeared before the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Thursday for his bail bid, however, his hopes of freedom were dashed.

Handing down the ruling, Magistrate Johannes C Kruger said there was a likelihood Mogotsi may evade trial as the addresses he provided during his bail application did not correspond.

"It is not in the interest of justice for bail to be granted given that he failed to submit an accurate address and he could evade trial and be unreachable," Kruger said.

The State, which was opposed to Mogotsi's release on bail, previously argued he did not cooperate with investigations and was unreachable when the investigating officer tried to reach him.

None of the addresses he provided could be verified.
