PRETORIA – Alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala is back in court on Tuesday, rejoining his 13 co-accused in the R228-million SAPS tender case.
Matlala is facing corruption allegations linked to the controversial Medicare24 contract.
His appearance comes after his plea and sentence agreement with the State fell apart. The agreement had proposed an eight-year sentence, but the court rejected it and indicated that a 12-year sentence would be appropriate.
Matlala subsequently withdrew from the agreement.
The Investigating Directorate Against Corruption is also expected to ask the court to transfer the matter to the High Court.
Meanwhile, the National Prosecuting Authority has withdrawn charges against suspended police commissioner Fannie Masemola.
The NPA says its decision followed a finding that there were no reasonable prospects of securing a successful prosecution against Masemola.
