BLOEMFONTEIN - The Supreme Court of Appeal will on Wednesday hear government’s challenge of a high court ruling that halted plans for 1,500 megawatts of new coal-fired power.
The Electricity Minister seeks to overturn a landmark ruling that nullified coal procurement targets, laid out in the 2019 Integrated Resource Plan.

The case, widely known as the Cancel Coal Campaign, was initiated by African Climate Alliance youth activists alongside environmental justice groups.
In the 2024 verdict, the High Court criticised the state's failure, to evaluate the effects of new coal emissions on the environment.
