COJ threatens to shut down Marble Towers over compliance failures

JOHANNESBURG - The City of Johannesburg is threatening to shut down Marble Towers in the Johannesburg CBD, saying the building has failed to comply with municipal regulations despite repeated warnings.

City officials are conducting inspections in the inner city as part of an ongoing operation targeting by-law violations, illegal trading and outstanding municipal accounts.

Johannesburg Mayor Dada Morero says an assessment is underway at Marble Towers following an earlier enforcement operation carried out a month ago.

He says the city is disappointed that the building has allegedly continued operating despite compliance concerns.

Morero says legal and emergency management teams are on site to determine whether the building should be closed completely.

He added that officials are also cracking down on illegal trading, counterfeit goods and undocumented foreign nationals as part of broader efforts to enforce by-laws and reclaim the inner city.
