Confusion over warrant of arrests for Crime Intelligence officials

JOHANNESBURG - There is growing confusion over the Investigating Directorate Against Corruption's (IDAC) aborted arrest of two senior crime intelligence officers.

On Thursday, Crime Intelligence Head Dumisani Khumalo and Head of Intelligence Analysis Nozipho Madondo, allegedly received calls from a IDAC official to present themselves at the Brooklyn Police Station in Pretoria.

However, hours later, IDAC officials also allegedly failed to pitch and they were told to go home. The reasons behind the failure to execute the warrants remain unclear.

In a statement, IDAC said it had no knowledge of the alleged arrest of Khumalo or anyone else from Crime Intelligence. “We wish to set the record straight that Gen Khumalo has not been arrested nor has anyone else from Crime Intelligence,” IDAC spokesperson Henry Mamothame said.

What does seem clear is that there are two factions attacking each other in law enforcement structures.

KwaZulu-Natal police commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, who was also at the Brooklyn Police Station, told eNCA that he and his colleagues were at war.

Mkhwanazi claimed he and Khumalo received intelligence on Wednesday that IDAC had itself 48 hours to get them behind bars.

“I did not believe that intelligence when it came. And today, when General Khumalo called me, saying what we received yesterday is really happening, I thought I should come here and see for myself," Mkhwanazi said.

"We are facing a war and there are many players in this game," he added.
