Cops probe medication found at Limpopo bus crash scene

MAKHADO - Limpopo police have launched an inquiry after large quantities of medication were found at the scene of Sunday’s deadly bus crash near Makhado.

It's understood there were bags containing large quantities of codeine-rich cough mixture scattered along the accident scene.

Police spokesperson Colonel Malesela Ledwaba says while the owner of the bottles of medication has not yet been identified, investigations continue so that they can establish their origin.

"Section 22A of the Medicines and Related Substances Act in SA makes it a crime to possess certain scheduled medicines without authorisation," he said.

"Legally, someone is only permitted to possess and carry the quantity of medicine you have been prescribed by an authorised prescriber. Carrying  a large quantity of medicine without exception is illegal."

Meanwhile, relatives are identifying the remains of 43 victims from the Limpopo bus crash.

Authorities now face the daunting task of identifying the bodies before repatriation. With many victims lacking identity documents, the process is even more complicated.

As part of the identification process, officials are collecting fingerprints for cross-checking with records from Malawi and Zimbabwe.
