Dobsonville residents battling dry taps

SOWETO - Residents in Dobsonville, Soweto, say water tankers have brought little relief to their water crisis.

On Monday, scores queued for water after battling dry taps for the past six days.

One frustrated resident said that while they note the water tankers deployed, she said the number of tankers is not sufficient to meet the demand.

“The water is not enough. There has to be another plan in place. Maybe there can be two tankers so that at least the water can be enough for everyone,” the resident said.

Another resident said the situation is dire as their daily lives have been disrupted.

“Toilets need to be flushed, and some children have not gone to school,” she added.

In the same breath, she also questioned the quality of the water being supplied by the tankers.

“We don't trust it because we do not know how clean it is. For now, we use it to flush the toilets and to bath,” she said.

Frustrated residents say Joburg Water is providing no answers on when the supply will be restored.

In a statement on Friday, Johannesburg Water said a major burst pipe had disrupted water supply to Zondi Reservoir, Zondi Tower, and the Dobsonville direct feed.

As a result, supply had to be closed off to allow for repairs to the inlet and outlet pipes.

According to Johannesburg Water, specialised material had to be fabricated and supplied in two phases.

The first delivery was carried out on Friday, while the second happened on Saturday,

Johannesburg Water said at the time that once all material has been received, repair work would proceed with an estimated time for restoration of supply to be communicated.
