Education in crisis | Keeping booze away from schools

EAST LONDON - "We will not allow the sale of alcohol at our schools, no matter what."

The statement comes from the Eastern Cape Education Department.

The firm stance underlies the authority's decision to revoke liquor licences at schools across the province.

The move is aimed at stopping educational institutions from contributing to the ongoing socio-economic problem of alcohol abuse.

The department's resolute stance comes in response to dissatisfaction from various schools that usually offer alcohol at festivals and special events for consumption by parents and people aged 18 and above.
