Families at TRC Inquiry to oppose delays

JOHANNESBURG - Legal representatives of families at the TRC Cases Inquiry say they will oppose efforts to delay its work.

Two former presidents are now challenging the neutrality of chairperson Sisi Khampepe.

Thabo Mbeki has filed an urgent affidavit asking that she step aside.

He argues that her roles as a TRC Commissioner and Deputy NPA head make her biased.

He joins Jacob Zuma, who also formally applied for Khampepe's recusal, citing bias.

But that's linked to his 2021 contempt ruling and claims of procedural unfairness.

The TRC Cases Inquiry was established in May this year to probe whether there was political interference in the prosecution of apartheid-era crimes.

The TRC referred around 300 cases for investigations and prosecutions.

Only about 10 are on the court rolls and just a handful of convictions have been secured.

If Justice Khampepe rejects these bids, both former presidents are expected to appeal.

That could derail the commission's work and deepen uncertainty over accountability for historic human rights violations.

Khampepe was appointed to chair the probe.
