TRC cases inquiry to hold pre-hearing meeting with victims’ families

JOHANNESBURG - The judicial commission of inquiry into alleged attempts to obstruct the investigation and prosecution of Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) cases is inviting interested parties to attend a pre-hearing meeting in the coming weeks.

The meeting aims to agree on a programme for the inquiry’s work and set timelines for all procedural steps.

The inquiry’s spokesperson Lionel Adendorf says TRC-related hearings remain deeply traumatic, with families still carrying grief many decades after their loved ones had their human rights grossly violated by apartheid forces.

He says the inquiry may require that old people revisit painful memories.

Adendorf emphasised that the pre-hearing engagement would be held in camera, and is designed to be a sympathetic and empowering engagement meant to streamline the process to secure justice.
