Former Knysna mayor Aubrey Tsengwa shot dead

KNYSNA - Former Knysna mayor and ANC councillor Ndoda Aubrey Tsengwa has been shot dead.

Tsengwa, 48, was shot on Wednesday night while reportedly on his way home in the Joodsekamp area of Knysna.

A preliminary investigation found that Tsengwa was travelling with three other people when an unknown assailant opened fire on the vehicle before fleeing on foot. 

The former mayor sustained multiple gunshot wounds to his head and upper body and was declared dead at the scene.

One of the passengers was wounded and taken to hospital. Police have opened a murder case and three charges of attempted murder.

Tsengwa served as Knysna mayor from August 2022 until February 2025, when he was removed from office following a motion of no confidence.

The DA has offered its condolences to Tsengwa’s family and friends.

“Whatever our political differences, we shared a commitment to serving our community. We call on SAPS to apprehend the perpetrators and ensure they face the full might of the law,” the party said in a statement.
