Gauteng PKTT arrests alleged mastermind behind Emfuleni electricity syndicate

JOHANNESBURG - The Gauteng Political Killings Task Team (PKTT) has arrested the alleged mastermind behind a syndicate accused of facilitating illegal electricity connections and stealing infrastructure at Emfuleni Municipality.

The 25-year-old suspect was arrested on Thursday, shortly after being released on bail in an unrelated matter. She is the eighth person to be arrested in connection with the case.

The case against seven other employees attached to the municipality’s Revenue and Electricity departments has been postponed.

The syndicate is alleged to have cost the municipality R9.9 million in lost electricity revenue and the theft of critical infrastructure.

The woman is expected to make her first appearance in court on Monday, 7 September. She faces charges of theft, damage to and theft of critical infrastructure, and money laundering.

“Police investigations are continuing, with authorities working to identify and apprehend all those involved in the illegal electricity connections,” police said in a statement.
