PRETORIA - KwaZulu-Natal Hawks narcotics investigator Karl Sander claims he was targeted for exposing alleged drug syndicate in the province.

Sander testified at the Madlanga Commission on Monday, where he aimed to clear his name.

The Commission resumed on Monday after a two-week recess to prepare its second interim report.

Sander said that opening a drug-related case without immediately identifying a suspect often raised red flags.

He said once a drug case is opened, investigators are placed under pressure to quickly link the matter to a suspect and proceed with charges.

This is despite evidence still being gathered.

Sander claimed he was targeted and sidelined after his findings.

He allegedly had to take a polygraph test ordered by suspended KwaZulu-Natal Hawks General Leseja Senona. This was over a missing coffee machine in the office.

This was despite the fact that the machine belonged to Sander himself.

He says he was later removed from his position and transferred, actions he believes were retaliation for his investigations.
