CAPE TOWN - The sentencing proceedings for Kelly Smith, Jacquen Appollis, and Steveno van Rhyn are drawing closer.

They were convicted of human trafficking and kidnapping Joshlin Smith.

The trio appeared briefly in the Western Cape High Court in Cape Town on Friday, where final preparations for their sentencing were concluded.

During their final appearance in Cape Town before sentencing, the trio was informed of the proceedings scheduled to take place from 27 to 29 May.

The court heard that the state would begin by presenting evidence from a US-based human trafficking expert, followed by a victim impact report detailing the profound effect of Joshlin's disappearance on her family and the community.

It's still unclear whether any of the accused will be calling witnesses to testify in mitigation of sentence.
