Hundreds displaced, roads closed, power cuts amid Eastern Cape floods

GQEBERHA - Hundreds of residents in the Eastern Cape have been forced out of their homes as persistent rain continues to batter the province. 

A total of 671 people are currently being accommodated in shelters after being displaced by the severe weather conditions.

Nelson Mandela Bay is among the hardest-hit areas.

On Thursday, metro officials provided an update on their state of readiness and emergency response plans for communities affected by the severe weather. 

Mayor Babalwa Lobishe said 22 shelters are housing displaced residents and providing meals.

She said she noted the trails of disruption that had been created by the severe weather conditions.

"As the municipality, we acknowledge the hardship being experienced by our communities, and we remain committed to supporting every affected household," said Lobishe.

According to Lobishe, more than 20 wards have been affected, several roads have been closed due to flooding as well as storm water issues. 

She added that a total of 14 power outages have been recorded, and one dam has overflowed.
