IEC estimates 780,000 people cast special votes on first day

JOHANNESBURG - The Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC) estimates that approximately 780,000 people cast their special votes on the first day of special voting, ahead of Wednesday’s local government elections.

Despite delays at some voting stations, the Commission says operations were largely smooth across the country, expressing satisfaction with voter participation.

IEC Chief Electoral Officer Sy Mamabolo says the turnout provides a positive foundation for the remaining special voting day and Election Day.

Mamabolo says the Commission is grateful to voters, political parties, candidates and thousands of election officials who ensured that voting took place at stations and in the homes of approved special voters.

The IEC urged all approved voters who have not yet cast their special votes to make use of the final opportunity on Tuesday.

Special voting stations will open at 8am and close at 5pm.

Those who miss the special voting window will only be able to cast their ballots on Wednesday at the voting stations where they are registered.

The Commission says it is optimistic that the progress made on the first day will translate into improved operations on the second day of special voting and a smooth Election Day.
