Joburg Water warns of 'no work, no pay' as unprotected strike unfolds

JOHANNESBURG - Johannesburg Water has slammed the ongoing unprotected strike by members of the South African Municipal Workers’ Union (SAMWU).

Joburg Water spokesperson Nondumiso Mabuza said the action is unprotected, as legally required procedures were not followed.

Mabuza warned that members who continue to participate in the strike will therefore be subject to a “no work, no pay” principle.

The protest began last Friday, 6 February.

According to Mabuza, the protest followed an approved general meeting.

Mabuza expressed concern at the timing of the protest, given that the city is experiencing a significant water supply crisis.

Mabuza said contingency measures have been implemented to limit disruptions to service delivery.

Meanwhile, she has urged employees to act in compliance with the law and to prioritise service delivery obligations.
