Key state witness faces tough cross-examination in Matlala trial

JOHANNESBURG - The attempted murder and racketeering trial of alleged crime kingpin Vusimuzi "Cat" Matlala and his four co-accused continues in the South Gauteng High Court.

Former security guard Bethwell Cele has been on the stand as the state's first witness for two days now.

During cross-examination, the defence accused Cele as the one who shot taxi boss Joe Sibanyoni.

The defence also pointed to inconsistencies in the three statements Cele gave to police, arguing that his version of events has changed over time.

Cele has denied the allegations, insisting he was not the shooter.
