Labour Department condemns growing cases of child labour

JOHANNESBURG - The Labour Department is raising the alarm over growing cases of child labour in KwaZulu-Natal.

It follows the shocking discovery of a 14-year-old girl working a night shift at a factory in Mandeni.

Deputy Minister Jomo Sibiya is condemning the incident, blaming employers for violating employment laws.

"The girl was working a night shift, around 10pm. A 14-year-old was working. We've opened a criminal case and will follow up," he said.

"We want to see that the court does justice. It's up to the court what they will decide, but it's against the law to employ a 14-year-old. So it's the employer."

Several undocumented migrants were also found.

"The employers are not complying with our labour laws," he added.
