LIVESTREAM | TRC inquiry continues probe into apartheid-era cases

JOHANNESBURG - The Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) cases inquiry will turn on Thursday its attention to Theresia Bezuidenhout, who is expected to give evidence and face cross-examination.

Bezuidenhout has held several positions within the Justice Department, most notably in the Master of the High Court system.

Her testimony comes as the Commission continues to examine the legacy of apartheid-era policing and the challenges that followed.

On Wednesday, former Police Minister Nathi Nhleko took the stand.

Nhleko told the Commission that the police’s decision not to fund the legal fees of retired apartheid-era police officers had an impact on prosecutions.

Among those he highlighted were four Crime Intelligence members accused in the Nokuthula Simelane case.

Simelane was abducted by apartheid security police four decades ago.

But her family has never received the answers they have spent years searching for. They still do not know where she was buried.
