Cele denies deliberate neglect of TRC cases

JOHANNESBURG - Bheki Cele said he found no attempts to derail Truth and Reconciliation Commission (TRC) cases while in office.

Cele testified virtually at the TRC Cases Inquiry on Thursday.

He responded to claims that TRC cases were deliberately neglected.

Lawyer Howard Varney had argued that from the perspective of the families, the TRC cases were singled out not for prioritisation but for neglect.

Cele returned to the Khampepe Commission of Inquiry for grilling after he made his first appearance last month, where he denied political interference in the failure to prosecute apartheid crimes.

He had previously told the inquiry there was little he could have done about apartheid-era crimes during his tenure as national police commissioner.
