Mapisa-Nqakula's corruption trial gets underway

PRETORIA - Former National Assembly speaker Nosiviwe Mapisa-Nqakula's corruption trial begins in the High Court in Pretoria.

She faces 12 counts of corruption and one of money laundering. 

The State alleges that she received R4.5 million in bribes from a contractor during her time as defence minister.

Mapisa-Nqakula has been out on R50, 000 bail since April 2024.

She resigned from the National Assembly after being charged, in a move she said was to protect the integrity of parliament.
