MPs disappointed by Motshekga no show at committee meeting

CAPE TOWN - MPs have expressed their dismay after Defence Minister Angie Motshekga's no-show in Parliament.

Motshekga was meant to appear before the Defence Committee to discuss the SANDF deployment and foreign allowances to troops.

But she sent a message saying she is travelling and can't appear.

The EFF said it was not buying her reasons and wants President Cyril Ramaphosa to force her to attend.

“It is a major point of concern when an executive member is running away from accounting to the relevant committee, said EFF MP Virgil Gericke.

“It’s not the first time. It’s not the second time and its not the third time. It cannot go on like this. This commission must arrive at the point where we complain about the continued absence of the minister.”

"We cannot just accept all the time that the minister is absent, that she's in transit. Who regulates her diary? Who tells her what must happen next? I mean, things are not just happening. She must come to this committee to account," Gericke added.

The EFF urged the committee to take a resolution compelling Motshekga to account.
