No corners cut in NDPP search - Kubayi

JOHANNESBURG - The Justice Minister Mmamoloko Kubayi says they will not compromise on finding the right candidate. 

The department will be conducting interviews on Wednesday and Thursday in search for a new National Prosecution head.

Six candidates have been shortlisted for the top job and includes former NDPP Menzi Simelane.

Kubayi says, "The [position] needs a person that would be able to drive strategy and ensure that they turn around and improve performance in terms of prosecution. 

"A lot of South Africans want to see cases move faster, prosecutions and prosecutors performing better and not to be lambasted by court and isolated cases."

Kubayi there is “zero room for mistakes” as the NPA’s work directly with the lives of people.

Despite seniority and importance of the role, only a small number of CVs were received.

Some believe top legal professionals avoid the job due to perceptions that the NDPP lacks independence, however, Kubayi rejects this. 

She pointed to deterrents among those is salary package, as well as intense pressure and scrutiny especially with major cases.
