NPA appeals conviction of prosecutor in 'Joe Ferrari' matter

JOHANNESBURG - The National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) has filed papers to appeal the conviction of state prosecutor Mkhuseli Ntaba.

Kwaggafontein Chief Magistrate Tuletu Tonjeni issued a warrant of arrest against Ntaba and convicted him of contempt of court.

This was after Ntaba failed to appear before the court in the Joe “Ferrari” Sibanyoni extortion case. Ntaba had previously informed the magistrate that he had a prior commitment and could not make the scheduled date.

Tonjeni struck the matter off the court roll, releasing the Mpumalanga businessman and his three co-accused.

They are accused of extortion to the value of R2 million from a local businessman.

Ntaba was subsequently suspended by the NPA after failing to appear in court.

The authority announced on Friday that it would be filing appeal papers, which it did on Monday.

Sibanyoni intends to oppose the appeal. His legal team filed their papers on Friday.
