JOHANNESBURG - Thousands of South Africans have over a month left to prove their identities, or risk losing them.
Millions of Identity Documents (ID) were blocked by the Department of Home Affairs after anomalies were found in them.

To date, over 2 million IDs have been unblocked. An additional 370,000 have until 10 June to come forward to make representations with supporting documents.
Home Affairs Deputy Director-General Thulani Mavuso said this is part of government's efforts to clean up the National Population Register.
According to Mavuso, this process has been ongoing since 1994.
"With the previous TBVC states, they each had their own systems," he says.
Before the dawn of democracy, South Africa consisted of homelands and after the dawn of democracy, all identification methods had to be standardised.

Mavuso said some of the anomalies were discovered during that process and the identity documents had to be blocked.
He said the department is currently looking at IDs blocked before November 2022.
