Parliament suspends Fadiel Adams, docks 20 days' pay

JOHANNESBURG - National Coloured Congress (NCC) leader Fadiel Adams has been suspended by Parliament for 20 days.

Adams' suspension comes after he posted a screenshot of an email drafted by a DA staffer on social media. It included contact details.

The Chief Whip of the Democratic Alliance, George Michalakis, lodged the complaint with Parliament's Joint Committee on Ethics and Members’ Interests.

Adams' salary has also been docked for 20 days.

The committee said it considered the fact that this was Adams’ second breach of the Code offence relating to the use of social media platforms.

It considered the second breach an aggravating factor in the matter of the penalty.

  1. Item 20(4)(a) – a reprimand in the House; and
  2. Item 20(4)(b) – that the Member enter an apology in the House for placing personal information about a staff member on his social media post; and
  3. Item 20(4)(f) – that the Member be suspended from his seat in parliamentary debates and committees for a period of 20 parliamentary days (item 20(40(f)); and,
  4. Item 20(4)(f) – that the Member’s salary and allowances be reduced by an amount equal to 20 days.
