Parly’s ad hoc committee wraps up draft report deliberations

CAPE TOWN - Parliament’s ad hoc committee investigating allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner Lieutenant-General Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi has concluded its deliberations on its draft report.

The committee, which has now received its sixth extension, is working towards a 30 October deadline to finalise its work.

Parliament has confirmed that MPs have been deliberating on the draft report in recent weeks, with several contentious issues coming back into focus.

These include allegations concerning Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala’s alleged cash payments to former Police Minister Bheki Cele, the non-appearance of former Crime Intelligence boss Feroz Khan, and the circumstances surrounding MP Fadiel Adams’ access to classified information.

The committee’s investigation covers a broad range of allegations, including claims of corruption, possible misconduct within the police service and the R228-million SAPS healthcare contract awarded to a company linked to Matlala.

The committee is now expected to send the draft report to parties implicated in its findings, giving them an opportunity to respond before the document is formally tabled in the National Assembly.

Committee chairperson Molapi Soviet Lekganyane thanked MPs and the committee’s content team for seeing the process through.

“This has been a marathon,” Lekganyane said.

He acknowledged the volume of material the committee had to work through, noting that its content team was made up of people rather than machines.

Lekganyane praised the team for its endurance and resilience, saying there may have been moments when the process appeared too difficult, but that they had continued until the committee reached the point of concluding its deliberations.

The committee’s draft report runs to 790 pages.
