Police evidence under fire in Matlala ‘trial within a trial’

JOHANNESBURG - The attempted murder case involving alleged underworld figure Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala and his co-accused continues in the South Gauteng High Court.

A police officer who was present when alleged hitman Musa Kekana was arrested is expected to take the stand, potentially shedding more light on what happened at the scene.

The testimony comes after a key contradiction emerged in court on Thursday.

Vehicle tracking records reportedly placed an unmarked white Toyota Fortuner at the scene of Kekana’s arrest.

But that account clashes with the evidence of operation commander Captain Phimi Sekgobela, who testified that the vehicle was never at the scene.

The defence has seized on the conflicting accounts, accusing police witnesses of tailoring their evidence and challenging their credibility before the court.
