CAPE TOWN - Corruption is flowing through South Africa’s water sector, but President Cyril Ramaphosa believes the government can still stem the tide.
Answering questions in the National Assembly, Ramaphosa said progress was being made in the fight against corruption and criminality in the sector, including efforts to tackle the so-called “water tanker mafia”.
The President is also pinning hopes on the National Water Action Plan, which was released last month after lengthy delays.

Ramaphosa says the plan is intended to address the country’s immediate water challenges while helping to resolve the broader water crisis.
“We’re also combating corruption and criminality in the water sector, including dealing with the whole challenge of the water tanker mafia,” Ramaphosa said.
He said the progress being made gave government confidence that implementing the National Water Action Plan would help resolve the water crisis.
“It will address many of the immediate water challenges communities face. This is what we aim to achieve,” he said.
