Retrenchment plans for rail operator

The good news is that more lines have opened up and more passengers are using trains.

The bad news is that the entity is still under financial stress.

Speaking at the Africa Rail Conference at the Sandton Convention Centre, the CEO, Hishaam Eerann, told eNCA the company has started a retrenchment process.

Talks are being held between management, labour unions and government.

Up to 600 workers could be affected. They are from Prasa’s long-distance train service.

"There has been some misinformation around this whole process. Yes, there is a process that Prasa embarked on in terms of Section 189, looking at certain retrenchments.

"This only focuses on a section of the business, it's not across Prasa. including mainline passenger services, the long-distance trains," Emeran said.
