SANDF withdrawal | Troops expected back home by end of May

PRETORIA - By the end of the month, all South African troops will be back from the Democratic Republic of the Congo.

They were deployed as part of the Southern African Development Community mission to ensure peace and stability in the east. But the rebel M23 group took the region.

During the offensive, 14 South African soldiers were killed and scores were wounded.

South African troops flew into battle via Goma International Airport. It is now closed, with the M23  rebels firmly in control.

The troops will have to travel by road to Tanzania before heading home.

But first, they will have to pass through Rwanda – the country that allegedly supported the rebels.
