SA troops begin phased withdrawal from DRC after peace deal

PRETORIA - A peace agreement between the DRC government and M23 rebels has led to a phased military withdrawal of Southern African troops.

The decision follows commitments to end hostilities and disarm armed groups, under the oversight of African multilateral organisations.

The mission was launched in December 2023 to support efforts to stabilise the region amid conflict with the M23 armed group.

 

Defence analyst Dean Wingrin says the SANDF's mission in the DRC was not a success.

Troops are now coming back home in phases. The government has stated its continued support for regional stability, and African-led peace efforts.
