SAPS turmoil | Mixed response to corruption inquiry

CAPE TOWN - President Cyril Ramaphosa announced a commission of inquiry into the corruption allegations against the Police Minister and other top SAPS officials.

There's been a mixed reaction following the announcement, with some political parties saying Senzo Mchunu should have been fired.

But former Gauteng Community Safety MEC Firoz Cachali's appointment as acting Police Minister has been welcomed.

Ramaphosa said this investigation will look into organised crime’s alleged infiltration of law enforcement, both past and present.

Ramaphosa has promised to safeguard the integrity and credibility of the police and other law enforcement agencies.

But not everyone is buying into his assurances.

Portfolio Committee on Police chairperson, Ian Cameron, points to little yield from previous commissions of inquiry.

Ramaphosa has placed Mchunu on a leave of absence and set up a commission of inquiry into his alleged wrongdoing.

Many see this as a mere slap on the wrist, but one analyst says Ramaphosa is balancing a delicate political situation.
