School space crisis deepens in Gauteng

PRETORIA - Gauteng's Education system remains under severe strain as persistent school placement shortages once again spill into public protest.

With nearly 2,000 pupils still unplaced, pressure is mounting on the Gauteng Education Department to deliver urgent and credible solutions.

Frustrated parents are camping outside Hoërskool Akasia in Pretoria, accusing authorities of failing local pupils.

Railway Secondary School was offered as an alternative, but parents describe it as a hollow fix.

An under-resourced school, they say, is unfit to absorb yet another wave of displaced pupils.

The Gauteng Education Department admits space is critically limited but insists it's scrambling to find solutions.

"We are finalising the satellite schools, which are also in the form of mobile units as well, but most of them don't want mobile units, but what do we do," said department spokesperson Steve Mabona.

"Because they need schools, we don't have brick and mortar schools, but a school with no brick and mortar does not mean it doesn't offer a curriculum."
