JOHANNESBURG - Targeted hits on witnesses, investigators, lawyers and other law enforcement authorities are getting out of control.
That's according to security expert Chad Thomas after three gunmen killed two people and injured three others in a brazen shooting outside the Booysens magistrate’s court on Tuesday.
Thomas said there was an urgent need to beef up security intelligence to stop criminal syndicates in their tracks.
"It's out of control. And we can't talk to the safety at the courts and the security measures at the court because this can happen anywhere,” Thomas said.
He said this could be resolved through effective crime intelligence.
“They [police] have to infiltrate these syndicates. They have to have actionable intelligence when hits are going to go down. And this is where our biggest problems lie," he said.
"Without being correctly resourced and capacitated, our crime intelligence is nowhere near capacity in terms of identifying and infiltrating these syndicates."
