Spring Day murder accused abandons bail

PRETORIA -The man accused of murdering a 21-year-old boy following an altercation during Spring Day celebrations in Refilwe, Cullinan to remain behind bars.

This comes after he abandoned his bail application.

The 53-year-old man appeared before the Cullinan Magistrate's Court on charges of murder, where his matter was then postponed to 27 October for further investigations.

According to National Prosecution Authority (NPA) spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana on 1 September 2026, a group of young people in Refilwe Extension 3 were celebrating Spring Day by pouring water on one another and on people passing by.

Mahanjana said it is alleged that while the accused was walking past, the group attempted to pour water on him.

"He allegedly took out a knife and stabbed the deceased. The deceased was taken to a local clinic, where he later succumbed to his injuries," she said. 

The accused was arrested on the same day after he was allegedly apprehended and assaulted by members of the community.
