PRETORIA - More than 300 Tshwane bus passengers have been affected after two buses were damaged during Spring Day celebrations in Gauteng.
Tshwane Bus Service says the buses have been taken out of service following incidents of vandalism during Tuesday’s celebrations.
The bus service condemned the behaviour, saying many of those affected were pupils and students who rely on the buses to get around.
“Our kids and community went overboard and damaged assets that serve them, leaving over 300 passengers today, many of whom are pupils/students. This is unnecessary and cannot be condoned,” Tshwane Bus Service said in a post on X.
Videos shared by the bus service show several incidents involving its buses.
In one video, four men appear to be jumping on top of a Tshwane bus at what appears to be a taxi rank.
Another shows a bus with a smashed window, while separate footage appears to show young people splashing water at a moving bus as passengers run for cover.
The damage has resulted in the affected buses being removed from service, disrupting journeys for hundreds of passengers.
The incidents occurred during Spring Day celebrations, when water fights traditionally form part of the festivities.
The celebrations also turned deadly in Refilwe, Extension 3, in Cullinan, where a 21-year-old man was fatally stabbed following an altercation.
Police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the killing.
