Suliman Carrim faces additional charge in vehicle smuggling case

MUSINA - North West businessman Suliman Carrim is expected to face an additional charge when he appears in the Musina Magistrate’s Court on Friday.

He is expected to be charged with contravening the Immigration Act for allegedly employing a foreign national illegally. The charge will be added to his existing charges as he prepares to apply for bail in the attempted vehicle theft case.

Carrim faces charges of attempted theft, fraud and money laundering in connection with the alleged attempted smuggling of bank-financed vehicles across the border.

The case relates to an incident at the Beitbridge border post on 22 July 2026, when police intercepted two vehicles being transported from Mahikeng in the North West to Malawi.

Carrim and his two co-accused allegedly attempted to obtain bank authorisation documents to facilitate the vehicles’ movement across the border. However, the required authorisation was not granted.

The 49-year-old businessman was arrested by the Commission’s Recommendations Task Team (CRTT) on 15 October, shortly before he was due to board a flight to the United Arab Emirates.

On Thursday, he was granted R100,000 bail in a separate case linked to the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry.
