Thembisa shutdown cuts off access to hospitals, schools and main routes

THEMBISA - Protesters have brought parts of Thembisa to a standstill.

They are protesting against unstable rates, rapidly increasing electricity tariffs, and service disconnections.

They also oppose the issuing of pre-termination and termination notices for municipal services.

Johanna Mabelebele, a Hospital View resident, said her 12-year-old granddaughter will remain at home.

"Her school is closed, so there’s nothing we can do for now," she said.

She added that she hopes the retailer across the street from her home will open if they need essentials.

Jabu Msimango, who lives in Xubeni and works in Rosebank, said there were no taxis operating from the usually busy Oakmoor train station.

He lives two streets away from the blocked Rev. R.T.J. Namane Drive and is unable to leave by car.

"This is about the people whose electricity has been cut off," he said.

"But also, the electricity increases have been steep -- it’s unaffordable," he added.

Residents took to the streets early on Monday after the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality disconnected electricity to non-paying customers.

Additional termination notices were issued to more households.

In response, Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza said electricity disconnections affecting indigent households would be temporarily suspended pending a comprehensive investigation.

The city said internal processes to address concerns will continue until Friday, 27 February.

Roads affected

Residents in sections surrounding the main routes Andrew Mapheto Drive, Dan Nkabinde Drive and Rev. R.T.J. Namane Drive have been forced to remain at home as protests continue.

Rev. R.T.J. Namane Drive connects surrounding sections to Ruth First Street, which links to the M57 and the R21 north of the township.

The road also connects to Olifantsfontein Road in the northwest, linking Irene and Midrand.

To the south, Rev. R.T.J. Namane Drive provides access to Kempton Park and Modderfontein.

The route also serves as a key access road to Tembisa Hospital and Zamokuhle Private Hospital, affecting residents seeking healthcare or visiting relatives.
