Third suspect in multi-million rand precious stones heist surrenders to cops

JOHANNESBURG - The third suspect in the alleged theft of precious stones has handed himself over to the Edenvale Police Station. 

This was confirmed by the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID) on Monday. 

The matter in question refers to the theft of precious stones worth nearly R15-million from a Killarney home in 2023.

In a statement, IPID spokesperson Lizzy Suping said the suspect will appear before the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Tuesday.

To date, two suspects have been arrested: Ekurhuleni Metro Police official Adrian Mackenzie and businessman Etienne van der Walt. 

The two appeared before the Johannesburg Magistrate's Court on Monday on charges of robbery with aggravating circumstances and fraud.

The pair are among five suspects accused of staging a home heist, making off with six boxes of precious stones valued at nearly R15 million.

Their case was postponed to 16 July for a formal bail application. 

The sixth suspect in this matter is said to have died, according to Suping.
