Transport Department dismisses fears of e-hailing platform shutdowns

JOHANNESBURG – The Transport Department has allayed fears that e-hailing platforms such as Bolt and Uber may be shut down.

This follows reports that the platforms could face closure if they fail to register with the National Public Transport Regulator.

The requirement forms part of new measures aimed at improving regulation within the sector.

The department says several platforms have already applied to the regulator, and the verification process is underway.

Successful companies are expected to be announced by the end of the month.

Operators were given 180 days to apply for licences, with the deadline approaching on 11 March. Concerns have been raised that companies that have not completed their registrations may not be allowed to operate.

Transport Department spokesperson Collen Msibi said the names of registered companies would be forwarded to provincial regulatory entities once confirmed.

“It will show that the app they are using is already in the database. You cannot apply for an operating licence if the app is not on the database,” said Mnisi.

“So, it is important that registration is finalised as soon as possible.”

He reassured drivers that services would not be suspended while the process is ongoing.

"There is no way that such an important and high-demand service will be suspended and people left unable to operate."
