KABOKWENI - As South Africa prepares for the festive season, police are promising tougher enforcement against drunk driving, increased operations in crime hotspots and a stronger focus on protecting vulnerable people.
The National Safer Festive Season campaign was launched in Mpumalanga, with police warning that those who break the law will face consequences.
But with road safety, crime and gender-based violence among the key concerns, the challenge will be turning these promises into safer communities.
“A zero-tolerance approach will be followed against drinking and driving. So be warned, do not drink and drive," said Cassel Mathale, Deputy Minister of Police.
"SAPS will ensure enforcement of legislation regarding legal trading and public consumption thereof, as well as enhancing safety at sports and recreational events.”

Authorities say operations will be rolled out nationally, with particular attention to crime hotspots and areas experiencing high levels of gender-based violence and femicide.
Dimpane also called on police officers to serve communities with commitment, saying the public is depending on them.
