DURBAN - An alleged member of the notorious West Gang, who was wanted in connection with a string of serious and violent crimes, was fatally wounded during a shootout with police in Inanda on Wednesday.
Police say they received information that the wanted suspect was at a house on Ndimande Road in the Mzomusha area of Newtown C, Inanda.
The man was wanted in connection with murder, attempted murder, kidnapping and house robberies.
Acting on the intelligence, police operationalised the information and proceeded to the identified address.

Upon arrival, officers found five men at the house and identified themselves as police officers. When officers requested to search the men, one of them allegedly ran into the house.
Police said shots were subsequently fired, resulting in an exchange of gunfire between the suspect and officers.
The suspect was shot during the exchange and sustained fatal injuries.
No police officers were injured in the incident.
Investigators are also looking into whether the man was among a group of young men seen firing firearms in a recent viral video reportedly recorded in KwaMashu.
