Apartheid victims’ families slam Mbeki, Zuma

JOHANNESBURG - Families of victims of apartheid-era crimes have described the actions of former Presidents Thabo Mbeki and Jacob Zuma as disrespectful.

The two are taking legal action to compel TRC cases inquiry chairperson, Justice Sisi Khampepe to recuse herself.

There are also growing concerns that the commission may fail to meet its deadline due to a lack of cooperation from certain state institutions.

The Khampepe Commission is investigating allegations of political interference that allegedly stalled the National Prosecuting Authority from pursuing apartheid-era cases.

Former National Director of Public Prosecutions Vusi Pikoli, who is listed as a witness, had previously detailed claims of political interference in an affidavit.

Although sworn enemies, Mbeki and Zuma are now aligned in their bid to have Justice Khampepe removed,

However, families of apartheid-era victims strongly disapprove.

Meanwhile, the lack of cooperation from state institutions is concerning the commission's evidence leader.

He says the police have ignored his requests.

The inquiry has been adjourned until Thursday.

Human Settlements Minister Thembi Simelane, whose sister, Nokuthula Simelane, was killed by members of the Security Police in 1983, is expected to take the stand as the first witness.
