Arson suspect arrested for Thembisa Hospital fire

JOHANNESBURG - A suspect has admitted starting a fire at Tembisa hospital which destroyed two units three weeks ago.

He also implicated several accomplices, among them a hospital security guard, following police questioning.

The case has been officially filed at the Thembisa Magistrate's Court and his bail hearing has been rescheduled for next week.

The outpatient department and the emergency unit were extensively damaged in the blaze.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi has welcomed the arrest.

Lesufi says law enforcement agencies will be cracking down on criminal organisations and individuals endangering public infrastructure and compromising community safety.

The police investigation team has indicated further arrests are imminent as their probe continues.
