Cape Town mayor calls for devolution of policing powers

CAPE TOWN - Cape Town Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis is sounding the alarm over a shortage of resources in the Anti-Gang Unit.

Newspaper reports claim there are only five working vehicles and limited access to firearms and bulletproof vests.

The Mayor says City officers should join the police in fighting gang and gun violence.

He is calling for the devolution of investigative powers to local law enforcement agencies.

This is despite the city having signed a three-way agreement to combat crime.

It enables cooperation and the sharing of resources among local, provincial, and national governments.
