JOHANNESBURG - Three Chapter 9 institutions have joined forces for a national inquiry into how the criminal justice system responds to gender-based violence and femicide in South Africa.
The Commission for Gender Equality, the South African Human Rights Commission, and the Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities Rights Commission are leading the inquiry.
The national inquiry is expected to run from 29 September to 2 October in Johannesburg in different phases.

The first phase is expected to focus specifically on survivor testimony and lived experiences, while the second stage will focus on pre-trial functioning and accountability within the criminal justice system.
“The National Joint Inquiry seeks to hold duty bearers accountable for issues, challenges and improvements that may be necessary to the justice system,” the Commissions said.
