JOHANNESBURG - City Power dismantles at least 10 stolen transformers during a crackdown at Kya Sands in Johannesburg.
One suspect was arrested during the raid.

The joint operation, carried out by Joburg City Power and Eskom, targeted illegal electricity connections and criminal activities linked to electricity theft.
“So what happens is that these transformers would have been stolen from City Power or Eskom, even industrial customers, by these criminals, and then they run their own network operation or distribution operation," said Isaac Mangena from City Power.
"Then from there they make customers or residents of those informal settlements to pay between R200 to about R5,000 for that stolen electricity using stolen equipment or network equipment and this is something that we have been flagging with the law enforcement agencies.”
